Powder coating is a dry finishing process that has become extremely popular since its introduction in North America over in the 1960s. More and more companies specify powder coatings for a high-quality, durable finish. Used as functional (protective) and decorative finishes, powder coatings are available in an almost limitless range of colors and textures, and technological advancements have resulted in excellent performance properties.
Powder coat is chip and scratch resistant and is ideal for parts which require a durable finish. When selecting a powder its important to decide on which type of powder is best. Some powders may fade or oxidize outside but offer brighter colors and some require different bases and clears for the desired durability and effect. If properly cleaned, the right powder can last for many years.
Any part which can be heated to roughly 400 degrees is safe to be coated, this includes many metals, woods, and even glass. Parts are media blasted for best adhesion, but polished parts may be coated with a transparent coating to preserve them.
Prepped parts are hung from a hook that is wired to the powder gun. Powder is sprayed and clings to the part using static electricity. The part is then transferred into the oven where powder flows out and cures.
Single color parts may only be coated once, but many metallics require a base and top coat. In some cases a primer and/or clear may be required for durability. Contact us to figure out the best options for your project.
